When I first started following Instagram, one of my favorite things that many people posted was what they were “currently reading”. I found so many good books that way. I guess it was trendy because I don’t see people doing that anymore, and you know what, I miss it, so I’ve decided to do something similar with my blog. I love to read, always have, so I’m going to share books I’m currently reading. On my menu bar you’ll notice I have a category called “Library”, this is where you can find all the books I love: cookbooks, fashion, interior design, etc… I’m a bookworm really, but only have time to read at night, usually right before I go to bed. I’ve promised myself to carve out a little time every night, it’s important to me, it’s my little reward everyday. I’m also big on continually learning, no matter what your age is, so I like to read things that feed my brain, inspire me, teach me something, or grow my faith. I hope you’ll enjoy this as much as I will and please feel free to leave any suggestions in the comments section, because I’m always looking for something wonderful to read next.
So let’s get started on my first “Currently Reading” post.
I have always read lots of books on nutrition and health. It started when I was in my late teens and I haven’t stopped since. I also really enjoy cooking and am finding more and more that it is important to make as many meals homemade and fresh as possible. I’ve always been pretty conscious of what I put in my body, and now more than ever I’m feeling a pull to go as organic and with whole foods as much as possible. My husband and I were at church and they mentioned “The Daniel Plan”. I’d heard of it before but had never read the book. They were selling the book (along with a few others that accompany the book) so my husband and I decided to read it together, and bought them. Alas, I’m reading the book alone, but I am passing on the information to my husband and my family is getting a whole lot of yummy meals out of it.
The thing that is different about this book more than any other that I’ve read on the subject, is it’s more about being the best you, that you can be, and not so much about what the scale says or having you incorporate any difficult methods of eating.
Here’s an excerpt from the book that basically wraps up the concept:
“Real food has the power to give you your life back and more fully engage in the purpose for your life. The reason to do it is not to fit in your jeans or look good in a dress, but to be awake to the beauty and miracle of life, to be able to live with purpose, to love, serve, connect, and celebrate the gifts God has given you”
I’m only halfway through the book and it has completely motivated me and also just made sense at of things I already knew and some new info that has been really helpful. The authors are Rick Warren D.Min., Daniel Amen M.D. and Mark Hyman M.D.. I was familiar with Rick Warren for his book “Purpose Driven Life” (he is also the senior pastor at our church) and Daniel Amen, I’ve seen on PBS and some other TV shows and was very impressed with his knowledge and he looks incredibly healthy, so I felt like I was getting information from some reliable sources.
The book is very easy to read, it’s organized and keeps your interest. So far so good. As you can see from my little pink tabs, there is lots of info I liked (you know me and my pink tabs if you’ve read any of my cookbook posts).
I also got the cookbook which I looked through and found lots of delicious looking recipes and also a great guide to organizing your pantry and shopping properly. You can also go to the their website for lots more info: danielplan.com, and can buy any of these books. There is also a book to journal and an app to help you follow the plan.
I’ll be blogging some of these recipes as I try them.
I also got the daily devotional that helps to motivate you. I really like having daily reads like this. I always have one kind or another that I follow and I leave on my nightstand so I can easily start my day with it.
Lastly, I got the jumpstart guide which I haven’t really looked at too much yet, but I will.
So that’s my what I’m “currently reading”. I’ll be posting as I go reading along so stayed tuned and again I’d love any suggestions in the comment section.
